Né dans une famille passionnée de moto, Nicky Hayden s'est mis en selle à l'âge de trois ans. Sa carrière débute dès l'année suivante, en dirt-track. Ce n'est qu'à onze ans qu'il dispute sa première course sur piste, au guidon d'une minimoto. Séduit par les circuits, il délaisse les terrains de motocross deux ans plus tard.
Been born in a family fascinated by motorcycle, Nicky Hayden got into the saddle at the age of three. His career begins from the next year, dirt-track. La saison 2001 débute difficilement mais Hayden se ressaisit sur les dernières courses pour finalement terminer au troisième rang.

2002 is the year of the consecration. With nine victories on sixteen possible, Nicky is crowned champion AMA of Superbike, the youngest of the history of the discipline. Without counting that with 17 successes in two seasons, he joins Merkel and Duhamel to the prize list of the most victorious pilots.
Le jeune américain est alors prêt pour le grand saut. Le HRC décide de l'intégrer à l'équipe Repsol Honda, engagée dans le championnat du monde MotoGP. Associé au tenant du titre Valentino Rossi, il dispute sa première saison hors des Etats-Unis. Passées les quelques difficultés rencontrées aux essais de pré-saison, Nicky progresse rapidement et signe deux podiums. Cinquième du championnat, il remporte le titre de rookie de l'année.

Il parvient néanmoins à monter sur les podiums des GP du Brésil et d'Allemagne, et conclut la campagne au huitième rang.
In 2004, team member's change. Rossi leaves the place to the veteran Alex Barros. During this difficult season for the official team, Hayden has difficulty in concretizing the promises suspected in 2003. He succeeds nevertheless in rising on the podia of the GP of Brazil and Germany, and concludes the campaign in the eighth row.
Staff technique remanié, nouvel équipier, 2005 doit être l'année de Nicky. Les problèmes n'épargnent pas l'Américain et son camarade Max Biaggi. Les deux hommes souffrent en début de saison mais Hayden s'accroche et effectue un week-end parfait à Laguna Seca. Imbattable à domicile, il remporte le GP des Etats-Unis et termine mieux la campagne qu'il ne l'a commencée. Il dispute le titre de vice-champion du monde à Melandri jusqu'à Valencia mais doit s'incliner devant l'Italien.
Reshaped technical staff, new team member, 2005 has to be the year of Nicky. The problems do not save the American and his companion Max Biaggi. Both men suffer in the beginning of season but Hayden hangs on and makes a weekend completed to Laguna Seca. Unbeatable at home, he takes away the GP of the United States and ends better the campaign than he began her. He competes for the title of vice-champion of the world to Melandri until Valencia but has to bow before the Italian.
